Winter Solstice | Workplace KPI Challenge

Latest News

Who would have thought a chewy little ball could become a workplace KPI?!

Before the Tang and Song dynasties, the Winter Solstice was even more important than the Lunar New Year. It was a time for official holidays, ancestral worship, and wearing new clothes—
emperors even collected a so-called “tangyuan tax.”

The Yongle Emperor of the Ming Dynasty was famously fond of tangyuan. He issued an imperial decree requiring officials across the empire to present tangyuan as Winter Solstice tributes—
with strict standards for size, texture, and sweetness.
Fail to meet expectations, and demotion could follow.

Just like that, a single tangyuan quietly evolved into an ancient version of an annual performance KPI.

Fun Historical Notes

Tangyuan fillings in the imperial court were said to carry symbolic meaning:

  • Red bean filling — representing loyalty and dedication

  • Black sesame filling — symbolizing blessings and longevity

This Winter Solstice, why not cook a perfect bowl of tangyuan
and level up your own “life KPI”? ✨
